A headteacher has today revealed there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 at a Hythe school.

In a letter to parents which was also posted on its website, the leader of Brockhill Park Performing Arts College, said they are now "monitoring the situation" and working with Public Health England.

The correspondence also confirmed that children who were in direct prolonged contact with the person who has taken ill will now stay home for 14 days.

It was not revealed if the person with coronavirus is a pupil or teacher.

The letter, from principal Sonette Schwartz , reads: "We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the school.

"We know that you may find this concerning but are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England.

"This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice on how to support your child.

"Please be reassured that for most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness.

"The small number of children who have been in direct prolonged contact with the confirmed case will have received an individual letter and will be staying at home for 14 days.

"The school remains open and your child should continue to attend if they remain well."

The letter also gives advice on what to do if your child develops symptoms.

At the end of August, Ms Schwartz revealed all pupils and teachers will have to wear a face covering in school, while pupils who travel to and from school by bus will also be required to cover their face .

Other measures to minimise the spread of Covid-19 include teaching in year group bubbles, us of one way systems and synchronised departure and arrival to lessons, and some limited staggering of lunches.

There are fears a second lockdown could be on its way as the number of cases are on the rise, with England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty this morning saying the nation faces a "very challenging winter".
