MWANIKI, a one and a half tonne black rhino, has been welcomed at Port Lympne wild animal park near Hythe.

The animal was born in America, but had been residing at Dubbo Western Plains Zoo in Australia's New South Wales before his long journey to Kent and the world's most successful breeding herd.

A 30-day quarantine period has been set for gentle Mwaniki after which time he will be introduced to the females within the 23-strong group now in the park's care.

He is already making friendly noises at the herd, has a big appetite and is becoming acclimatised to Kent's wet and windy weather.
