DAMAGE to a gas meter caused by vandals led to a gas leak that could have killed the occupants of a house.

The meter on the side of a property in Church Hill, Hythe, was kicked several times which damaged a connection pipe.

The resulting leak could have proved lethal if it had not been detected early.

The incident took place at around 9pm on Friday.

Det Insp Kenny Ingram said: "This is a very serious matter that could have resulted in an explosion with casualties and possibly fatalities."
