A kitchen has suffered smoke damage after a blaze started in an oven.

Two fire engines from Folkestone were called to a house in Woodlands Drive, Hythe, at around 7pm yesterday following reports a kitchen was alight.

Fire crews entered the house wearing breathing apparatus and used a hose reel to put the flames out.

They also used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the smoke.

A spokesman from Folkestone station said: "We were called to the house at 7.01pm. A fire had started in the oven and spread to the kitchen units.

"There were two people in the house and a dog but they got out safely before we arrived.

"They had a working smoke alarm installed, which had sounded.

"The kitchen is mostly smoke damaged."

Firefighters from Folkestone were also called to a home in East Cliff at 4.20pm yesterday following a chimney fire.

Crews removed the fire place and rodded the flue before carrying out a thermal scan of the internal chimney stack to check for hot spots and fire spread.

They also gave the owner safety advice, leaving the property just after 5.30pm.

A spokesman said: "Fire crews are reminding people to make sure their chimney is in good working order and fit for the winter before it is lit for the first time this year or you could be putting your family and home at risk."
