A database of unsuitable narrow roads being used by lorry drivers with sat navs should be expanded to take in more of Hythe.

That is the view of town councillors, who have added several roads to a list being compiled by Kent County Council.

More lorries have got stuck on minor roads since sat nav systems began to be more widely used.

Network planner Graham Spatchett is compiling the database so he can approach sat nav companies in the autumn about putting warnings on their systems. Road signs will be looked at as well.

The only road on the list from Hythe at the moment is Mount Street, which links Prospect Road with High Street.

Speaking on a meeting of the plans and works committee, Mayor Alan Ewart-James said Blackhouse Hill should be added to the list.

And Cllr David Owen said: “I’m amazed that Mount Street should be the only one on that list. Blackhouse Hill and Horn Street are two major arteries into this town and we’ve all seen lorries getting stuck going down them.”

Shepway’s roads on the sat nav blacklist are:

Cheriton Court Road, Folkestone, linking Horn Street with Church Road; Harbour Way, Folkestone; The Row in Elham, linking the Old Canterbury Road with the main road; Teddars Lees Road, linking Etchinghill with Hawkinge; Spitfire Way in Hawkinge.
