Thieves have burgled the home of a much-loved former councillor just days after he died.
The raiders took three medals from Chris Capon - his MBE, Honorary Freeman of Hythe award and his Hythe Town Council medal.
Other items taken from his Seabrook Road home in Hythe included a commemorative cut glass bowl.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Dave Hart said: "Mr Capon's family are devastated that someone could have broken into his home and stolen such treasured items. We are determined to bring the offender to justice."
The veteran councillor died of cancer aged 78 on February 18. He was nicknamed "Mr Hythe" because of his long-standing high profile in the town.
Police believe the thieves broke into some time between February 22 and 28. His funeral takes places on March 11.
Mr Capon was a councillor for Hythe, in town, district and county level, over 46 years until 2013.
He was awarded his MBE for services to the community and local government and by 2013 became one of only three people to me made Honorary Freeman of Hythe.
The stolen vase, with the Hythe coat of arms etched on the side, was presented to him in recognition of his service as the town’s Mayor during the 1970s.
DC Hart said: "We would like to hear from anyone who saw people acting suspiciously in the area during those dates.
"A neighbour saw a man walking down the side of the property on Saturday 27 February, and we are very keen to speak to him, as he may be able to help us with our enquiries.
"We also urge anyone who has been offered medals matching these descriptions to contact us."
The man seen on February 27 is described as aged between 40 and 50, white, with blond hair and of a medium build. He was wearing a black jumper and blue jeans.
