KENT Police are advising elderly residents to check the identity of anyone who calls at their home after a bogus caller conned a pensioner by claiming to be a police officer.
The 86-year-old victim was at home in St Leonard’s Road, Hythe, last Friday afternoon when the man knocked on her door.
He said he was working undercover and needed to use her home as an observation point. He flashed a black wallet that the lady assumed was his police warrant card.
He went upstairs and when he left several minutes later the woman noticed her jewellery box and a 9ct gold ring with seven stones had been stolen.
The offender is described as a white man of medium build, approximately 5ft 8in tall with short, brown untidy hair. He was wearing dark, smart clothing.
PC Phil Harvey-Hendley said: “This man has taken advantage of the trusting nature of an elderly lady and stolen her property.
"If you have elderly relatives and neighbours please remind them to check everyone’s identity thoroughly and not to let anyone into their home.
“We have a scheme in South Kent where callers are asked to go to a nominated neighbour to deter bogus callers."
Anyone who would like information about this scheme should contact Sally Coleman, the police's parish and neighbourhood watch liaison Officer, on 01304 218151.
Anyone with information about the incident in Hythe is asked to contact Kent Police on 01303 850055. Alternatively, if you wish to remain anonymous, call Kent Crimestoppers free on 0800 555 111.
