Sam Denly is feeling the pressure after Hythe’s poor start to the season continued last weekend.

Defeat at home to Whitehawk means the Cannons have three points from their first four Isthmian South East games.

They’re already out of the FA Cup and were thrashed 7-1 by Faversham in the Velocity Trophy on Tuesday night.

Denly said: “There’s obviously pressure there. I put pressure on myself but you’ve got to have faith in the boys you’ve got. If I need to change it and bring different personnel in, I will do that. Hopefully we can work on it and get things right.

“We’ve got to keep working hard, keep believing in what we do, tinker with a few things and I’m sure it’ll turn.

“There’s pressure, I know that. There should be pressure as well because we all want to compete.

“It’s not been the start we wanted but we’re four games in, not 24.”

Hythe, who don’t play this weekend, have only scored one goal in their last four matches, during which time they've conceded 14.

“I signed quality players,” said Denly. “They haven’t become bad players overnight.

“But we’re creating chances and not taking them, which ultimately is going to cost us. It’s frustrating and we know where we’re going wrong, but players have got to take responsibility.

“The performance against Whitehawk was much better but you’re judged on winning games and at this moment in time, we’re not. We know we’ve got to improve and we’ll do that.

“It’s a results business, I know that. I’m big enough and ugly enough to understand that if I’m not doing it, there will be a price to pay. A couple of players have gone last week because it’s not quite happening and I will keep trying to bring players in to improve the squad.

“There were a lot of positives to take away from Saturday’s performance but we didn’t score again. That’s why we didn’t get any points and it’s something we’ve got to address quickly.”

New signing Liam Quinn made his debut at centre-half against Whitehawk but Ben Fitchett and Luke Blewden have left the club.

Striker Sid Sollis, meanwhile, has joined Canterbury City on a dual-registration deal to build up his fitness.
