Hythe boss Sam Denly reaches Callum Taylor agreement but loses defender to Maidstone United

Hythe manager Sam Denly is hopeful of strengthening his squad with the signing of Callum Taylor.

The club have reached an agreement with the defender after he left Tonbridge Angels at the end of June in search of new opportunities.

Denly, however, remains wary of what has proven an unpredictable transfer window, as experienced first hand in the last week.

“Callum Taylor came in from Tonbridge, he’s a young centre-half and he’s done really well and impressed,” said Denly.

“He’s gone away on holiday now but we’ve agreed a deal with him so he’ll hopefully be another addition to the squad.

“I’m happy with what I’ve got, I think we’re looking strong. I’m never going to turn away players that come up here and there but in terms of what we’ve got I think we’re in a good position.”

Ryan Johnson has, meanwhile, signed for Maidstone United little over a week after he rejoined Hythe.

The defender arrived at Reachfields earlier this month but has since featured in the National League South side’s last two pre-season friendlies against Southend United and Dagenham & Redbridge.

Denly added: “We agreed a non-contract deal with RJ and then literally the next day after we’d done it and agreed it all, Maidstone came knocking on his door.

“RJ rang me and we had a chat about it and he played for them last Tuesday and Saturday so you do never know at this level.

“Not a lot of players are contracted, they can sign a form but it only takes a seven-day approach and because it’s pre-season it is hard.

“You want to get things done and get players settled but it can always change in non-league unfortunately.”

Hythe are still also working on a deal for ex-Gillingham full-back Aaron Simpson, who has been playing for the club in pre-season after turning down a new contract at Priestfield this summer.

“It’s ongoing,” admitted Denly. “He played Saturday so hopefully over the next week we’ll get something agreed and get it done.

“We have spoken and discussed things and it looks like we’ve got something agreed so we’re just waiting to get it confirmed now and get the forms done so I’m hopeful over the next week we can get him in.”

Town continued pre-season preparations on Saturday as they played out a goalless draw at home to Aveley. They were due to face New Romney at home last night (Tuesday) and visit Margate on Saturday.

Denly added: “I’m happy with how pre-season has gone, we came in early and the boys have been working well.”
