Hythe are out to continue their play-off push after getting under Beckenham’s skin at the weekend.

Becks assistant manager Billy Walton criticised the Cannons’ approach after Saturday’s goalless draw at Eden Park Avenue, dismissing them as a side who only create chances from long throws and corners.

Hythe visit East Grinstead tonight (7.45pm) looking to move within two points of the Isthmian South East play-off places after extending their unbeaten run to seven games.

They’ve had the measure of title-chasing Beckenham this season, winning the home game 3-0 and creating several good chances to beat them in the return.

“I thought it was a good game between two good teams,” said Cannons boss Steve Watt.

“Obviously Beckenham have been outstanding this year and are challenging to win the league.

“They’re a lovely club, with a lovely pitch, and it’s great to see another Kent club up there doing so well after promotion.

“They’ve only lost twice at home all season and I’m proud of how the boys restricted a very, very good team to one shot on target.

“We had a number of chances ourselves to win the game but in terms of how we played, I’m really pleased.

"If I’m honest, it’s two points dropped because we more than deserved to win the game.

“When you’re playing a team as good as they are, you know it’s going to be tough.

“We’ve played them twice now and over 180 minutes we haven’t conceded a goal and I can’t remember off the top of my head them having a shot on target in the first game.

“So, we've restricted them to one shot on target in 180 minutes, which isn't bad for a team that, according to some reports, is no good.

“We don’t create any chances in open play at all but in the first game I believe all three of our goals were in open play.

“So, yeah, we’re doing all right for a team that have got a bad way of playing and are not really any good.

“The boys are doing well if that’s the opinion of certain individuals.

“No one thinks we’re any good but we don’t care what other people think and we don’t care how other teams play.

“We’re there to try and win games of football.

“Saturday was a game where we had to be more direct because they didn’t handle that play well.

“At half-time their management were walking off moaning about long balls and that gives us confidence because we know it’s causing them problems.

“When you hear people complaining, you do it a little bit more.

“We were really unlucky not to come away with three points against title challengers who I think are a very good side.

“Teams seem to be embarrassed if they don’t beat us, which is disrespectful to the players.”
