Boss Clive Cook admits his Hythe side have hit a purple patch in front of goal and he just hopes it lasts.

Cook watched his side lose their opening three games of the Bostik South campaign – scoring just twice – however, has since seen Town fire in their past two games, putting four past Ramsgate and then five against Guernsey on Saturday.

Cook said: “It’s always pleasing to get some wins and put some points on the board, so I’d be lying if I said things didn’t feel better than 10 days ago.

“It’s still early days, though. Everybody is still finding out about each other and taking points off each other. All we can do is look at ourselves and do the best we can.”

He added: “Guernsey are no mugs – they will nick points this season, as they showed at Lewes.

“It’s just that we seem to have hit a purple patch in front of goal.

“In the first three games we made opportunities but we just couldn’t put them away. Now we are putting them away.

“It could have been even more in truth. You have times like that in football, where one minute you’re scoring and the next you couldn’t hit a barn door.

“Hopefully, it can continue for a while yet.”

After losing Tuesday night’s Kent Senior Cup defeat against Folkestone (5-4 on penalties after the game finished 1-1) at Reachfields, the Cannons head to unbeaten Lewes – with 10 points from four games – on Saturday.

Cook said: “I’d take one goal at Lewes if it meant we got the points. It’s a hard place to go, they get a big-ish crowd behind them on a nice pitch.

“They are decent and have made a good start. They haven’t lost yet but hopefully we can be the first team to go there and do it.”

On Tuesday night Hythe face a swift reunion with former keeper Joe Mant, who signed for VCD Athletic after being released last month in the wake of Will Godmon’s arrival.

Godmon is set to start at the Dripping Pan after missing the Guernsey game through suspension and returning against Folkestone while Cook also ran the rule over former Maidstone academy midfielder Will Thomas following the 19-year-old’s switch from East Grinstead, where he was captain.

Cook said: “We had Will here when he first left Maidstone. He’s at a good level and is young and hungry. He’s got 40 or 50 games under his belt now and has been captain even though he’s still 19.

“He’s grown in stature since he was last here, although he knows he will have to work hard to get his chances, as everyone is working hard at the moment.”
