He has done it again!

Dymchurch angler and guide Dave Wood-Brignall has broken the European record for red fish with this 4lb 10oz stunner from a Norwegian fiord on a lure.

As an angling guide in Norway, Dave has an impressive CV. He previously caught a 160lb plus halibut from the same shore to claim the world record.

It looks like the conger eel is starting to recover in numbers with many anglers catching small “straps” from most venues.

After a near total wipe out of the eels in the 1960s, due to a prolonged spell of extreme weather, conger hot spots for years produced none! It is great to see them on the mend.

If you are lucky enough to hook one, take your picture and let him/her go, that way the good news for this species will continue.

*With still no access to the lower deck of the Admiralty Pier, our disabled and infirm angling colleagues are struggling to find spots with easy access to continue to enjoy our great sport.

At this time with all the stress of covid, “downtime” is most needed indeed.

Folkestone Pier and Samphire Hoe are both good venues but are tough if you are in a wheelchair. There are a few spots to try that have good access, however. One of them is Ramsgate Pier, where you can drive the car right to your chosen spot!

The small jetty at Hampton in Herne Bay is always worth a go but the water here is shallow so check tide times.

With so many non able bodied anglers I have always wondered why the lack of facilities has been overlooked for so long.

Freshwater anglers have designated areas with good access on most club/commercial fisheries and it would be nice to see the same for the saltwater angler.
