Scott Porter has quit as Hythe Town manager after failing to agree a playing budget with the board for next season.
Porter had been hoping for good financial news when he met the board last night (Tuesday) so he could keep his squad together for next season.
Hythe finished eighth in Ryman League Division 1 South after winning six of their last seven games but Porter admitted last week he was uncertain what the future held.
He said: "I won’t know until next Tuesday. I’ve got a meeting and I’ll hopefully get what I want, money-wise. The players know I’ve got that meeting and I’ve told them to be patient and wait for the offer from me."
But now it looks like the team Porter assembled will break up over the summer.
Hythe director and secretary Martin Giles said: "Last season, in common with many other clubs, we had to reduce our playing budget in mid-season, which is something we have never had to do before. We had experienced an overall drop in sponsorship and were then hit with the extremely wet weather which affected our cash flow and lead to midweek games and consequent reduced attendances.
"Whilst we hope that things will improve or that we will enjoy good cup runs, we cannot rely on that happening and must set a realistic figure that we know we can maintain throughout the season.
"It is still ahead of many others but it was not something that Scott could accept.
"During Scott’s five seasons as manager, Hythe Town FC has gained promotion to the Ryman League, won the Kent Senior Cup and become the first Kent League club to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup for 53 years, meeting Hereford United, (who were) then in the Football League.
"Scott never finished lower than eighth in the Ryman South League and reached the play-offs in our second year in the league.
"We thank Scott for all he has done for the club and wish him well in the future."
Tweets from Porter's players (see below) suggest they are also walking away from Hythe.
