Jack Green’s return to a Great Britain vest proved a success as he helped secure the GB 4x400m relay team a place at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The 23-year-old from Hythe ran the third leg for GB in the heats of the IAAF World Relays in the Bahamas on Saturday evening to help his country through to Sunday night’s final.
In the final race of the meeting, the new-look quartet of Conrad Williams, Rabah Yousif, Green and George Caddick then recorded an improved time of 3:01.50, though it was only enough for sixth place, well behind gold medallists USA.
It was however enough to ensure Britain’s place at Rio next summer and Green - who returned to the track this month after nearly two years out of the sport - ran a split of 45.22secs in the final, an improvement from 45.38 in the heats.
Green said: “I don’t think we were overly in it. We got into the final in last place and we didn’t come last tonight so we over performed compared to our heat run. This shows the boys stepped it up.”
He added: “It’s lovely (to be back). It’s a relief as well as being very happy. There was one point when I’m sure a lot of people including myself thought that I’d wouldn’t be back at any level let alone a World Relay final. I’m really happy and things are going well.”
The GB women's 4x100 team also secured their place at Rio 2016, which is good news for Kent's Dina Asher-Smith, who was unable to take part in the Bahamas due to university commitments but who helped the GB quartet claim World Championship bronze in 2013.
