Jack Green has had to pull out of the World Athletics Championships in Beijing.
The Hythe star has withdrawn from the British Athletics team after suffering a severe onset of sciatica.
Green was due to compete in the 400m hurdles and the 4x400m relay following his successful appeal to compete in the hurdles event, after originally only being selected for the relay.
British Athletics performance director Neil Black said: “I really feel for Jack who put his all in to getting fit for the championships, to be struck with another issue unrelated to the previous one."
Green said: “I’m disappointed but experience tells me that I have to look forward to what is next and turn every experience in to a positive one.
"I didn’t want to let anyone down but I have to accept that for now, this just isn’t my time.”
It's a bitter blow for Green, who despite an almost two year absence from the sport after illness and injury, leapt back to the top of the GB rankings this season after spending the winter training with acclaimed coach Loren Seagrave in Florida.
The 23-year-old’s season’s best time of 49.31secs came in mid-May in the Doha Diamond League meeting, and despite the mark coming near the start of the season, only one other Brit has beaten it since.
Green becomes the second Kent athlete to withdraw after British Athletics decided not to risk Adam Gemili following an injury he suffered in a Diamond League event 11 weeks ago.
