Tony Beckingham quit Hythe Town this week with chairman Paul Markland admitting he always doubted whether his joint-managership with Clive Cook would work.

Mr Markland appointed the pair to succeed Tim Dixon less than a month ago but Beckingham took charge of just five league games before walking away.

His departure was announced on Monday afternoon, just 48 hours after Hythe had drawn 2-2 with East Grinstead – who Beckingham had left to join them.

Mr Markland said: "I suspected something like this might happen. I’m not a great believer in joint-bosses at anything but they wanted to do it.

"I’m not particularly surprised but it’s a shame because it could have worked well. Tony and Clive were of one mind when they started but they started to have different opinions.

"I was never sure something like that would work out comfortably and time’s proved it hasn’t.

"Their opinions were different and Tony felt it was time to go somewhere else and have his opinion there. I wasn’t convinced at the beginning but they were so certain about it so we let them carry on.

"Unfortunately, it hasn’t proved to be the right thing."
