Burgess Hodgson Chartered Accountants in Canterbury

An accountancy is celebrating 40 years at the same office.

Burgess Hodgson moved from London to Camburgh House in New Dover Road, Canterbury, in 1976 with eight employees and two partners, Ben Hodgson and Colin Slater.

Mr Hodgson has since retired and lives in Poole but Mr Slater remains at the firm.

Today, the building is home to 104 staff and 15 partners.

“Part of our strategy has been to keep one office, as opposed to multiple offices,” said Steve Sutton, who was part of the original move and has been senior partner since 1993.

“If you come to our office, you would probably meet two or three partners. There wasn’t much of a firm when we came here. We had to grow it based on excellence among staff.”

The company aims to take on 10 to 12 trainees and apprentices this year, similar to last year, which it considers “good growth”.

Mr Sutton added: “We have never grown by acquisition. It is all about internal growth.

“There are always concerns when you run a business. We have got Brexit around the corner and I don’t know if it will do much to us but there is a worry what the fallout will be.”
