High street bank TSB is returning to Canterbury city centre - just months after closing its main branch.

The bank has opened one of 43 new 'pop-up' services in the city which will remain open until the summer.

TSB's branch in Canterbury closed in February

It announced last year its branch in The Parade was closing due to the changing habits of its customers. It was one of more than 160 nationwide to be axed.

It closed its doors in February with customers told their nearest branch was now in Sheerness.

Now the new pop-up branch, opened to coincide with the reopening on non-essential retail, will allow customer to make payments and get advice - as well as being offered assistance with bereavements.

The Canterbury store - which will be based at the Canterbury Umbrella Centre at St Peter's Place - is among the first 18 to open.

Most will be based in locations where it takes TSB customers longer than 20 minutes to travel to their nearest TSB branch. TSB has introduced 100 staff roles to deliver this new face-to-face service.

TSB is opening a number of pop-up branches across the country

Director of branch banking, Carol Anderson, said: “Although we’ve seen a significant rise in customers using digital banking, we know accessing banking services and cash remains important to many customers and we’re always looking for innovative and inclusive ways to help them.

“The pop-up service will support our customers in parts of the country where it takes longer to get to a branch. The pop-ups and future access to cash pilot will test demand for these types of services, giving us insight on what more we can do for customers in the future.”

TSB has main branches in Maidstone, Sheerness, Chatham, Bluewater and Tunbridge Wells.
