Breaking through the glass ceiling during Global Entrepreneurship Week

Women who would love to set up their own business are being given a chance over the next few days.

Events across the county will celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week which kicks off on Monday.

Would-be female entrepreneurs can chat about their ideas and learn from experts.

The Business Link Centre for Enterprise at 85 High Street, Chatham - the only complex in the country that focuses on helping women into business - is open all week for people to drop in.

Marion Warren, from Business Link North Kent said: "This friendly, female-only centre is a fantastic resource for ladies, with staff on hand to inspire, support and offer free information and advice to those looking to become self-employed. The centre itself is equipped with computers, printers, a coffee bar and a children's area too, an ideal place for women who what to start a business, but they aren't sure of how to go about it."

As a taster for the week, an event specially for women will be held on Friday at the Marlborough Room, Hall Place Enterprise Centre, Harbledown, Canterbury (9am -1pm).

Mother of three Acey Davies will speak about the launch of Pram Pushers, a local directory for mums in the Thanet area.

But the week is not just for women. Other events will be encourage both sexes into self-employment.

Dorothy Thom, from Business Link, East Kent, said: "Enterprise, and enterprising individuals, boost the local economy - my role is to help people to spot opportunities, utilise their talents and develop the skills and confidence necessary to succeed in business."

Melodie Webster, also from Business Link North Kent, added: "During the last 12 months, we coached 497 people who lack confidence and are hampered by challenging circumstances, within the North Kent area. We have welcomed many people to various events to help them turn their business ideas into reality."
