A MULTI-MILLION pound grant means work can now begin on the new Mid-Kent College campus.

The college has received £41million towards the £76million project on the Lower Lines in Gillingham, which will include up-to-the-minute training facilities in subjects such as construction, engineering, hair and beauty, animal care and health care.

The funding from the Learning and Skills Council means work can begin on the campus this autumn, in the hope it will open in September 2008.

The remainder of the cost will be paid for through the sale of the college’s existing sites in Horsted, Chatham and City Way, Rochester.

Sue McLeod, vice-principal of curriculum, said: "The college expects high demand for the new specialised diplomas being introduced nationally for 14 to 19-year-olds from 2008.

"We can ensure that the new campus is designed specifically with these new courses in mind."
