Traffic levels on the Eurotunnel service are showing a "trend towards nomalisation" after being disrupted by border changes due to Brexit.

The cross-Channel operator, which runs between Folkestone and Coquelles, saw passenger numbers tumble due as travel restrictions were imposed over the last year due to the Covid crisis. Freight numbers also fell as a result of a combination of the pandemic and Brexit.

But parent company Getlink says February figures are showing signs of life.

The Le Shuttle Freight figures saw 99,787 trucks use the service during the month - down 24% on the same time last year.

However, passenger vehicles were at 31,277 - down 81% on February 2020.

It said the figures reflected "a market still marked by the adjustments to new post-Brexit administrative rules, but with a trend towards normalisation".

It added: "The compulsory requirement to present a negative Covid test, carried out on British soil less than 72 hours previously, for trucks entering France remains the most restrictive provision for cross-Channel logistics chains."
