A leading mobile phone network has extended its superfast 5G coverage in Kent.

EE has now switched on the service in Minster, in Thanet - allowing those with 5G-enabled phones to access speeds up to ten times faster than the existing 4G network.

Typically, users should expect average speeds of between 150-200Mbps - much faster than most home broadband connections - and up to a lightning fast 1Gbps.

The news comes just hours after Apple unveiled its latest iPhone 12 range - the first Apple phones capable of benefitting from 5G.

EE - owned by BT - has already turned its new network on in Dartford, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Maidstone. It is currently the widest provider of 5G with the service available in 112 towns and cities across the UK.

Neil Aitken, BT Group regional lead for the South East, said: “It’s great to see more places in Kent benefit from 5G. The new technology will enable a faster, more reliable mobile connection, helping a range of sectors.

“We know that demands for data from consumers and businesses are continuing to increase, so the arrival of 5G in more places in the region will make sure it’s ahead of the game in terms of connectivity and competitiveness.”

Adam Bryan, chief executive officer, South East Local Enterprise Partnership said: “This is such an important milestone in realising our digital ambitions. 5G technology could become a key driver of economic growth in the years to come and will enable more innovation in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare and construction.

“The challenges we have all faced this year has meant digital communications have taken on an even more important role. We’re hopeful that 5G will bring in a new era for the region and the fact EE has switched on its 5G network here in some towns, is a huge positive.”
