New firms urged to register for VAT online

Forget paper, use the internet. That's the message from tax officials to new Kent businesses registering for Value Added Tax for the first time.
Around four out of every five firms already register online, but HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) wants to shift more firms from paper to web-based filing.
It claims registering for VAT online is easier, more secure and faster than using a paper form, avoids postal delays and provides on-screen help.
Businesses also receive an immediate on-screen acknowledgment the application has been received.
Internet registration enrols firms for HMRC's VAT Online service, enabling businesses to file returns online. The certificate of registration is also available online.
The service allows firms to update their details and, if necessary, cancel their registration.
HMRC's Gill Evans said: "Around four out of five new businesses already register online for VAT. VAT returns must be submitted online, and payments must be made electronically, so it makes sense for businesses to get online at the first stage of the process by registering via our website."
