A new £150,000 hangar will be built at an airport six months after it opened a £700,000 plane shelter which is already nearly full.

Lydd airport expects to start work on the facility this month and aims to have it completed by July.

Executive manager Hani Mutlaq said the decision to invest in additional hangar space was driven by a rise in business and general aviation traffic using Lydd.

The new 45m by 35m facility will cater for larger jets too big for the existing space.

Bosses unveiled a hangar in September which is already operating near capacity.

Mr Mutlaq said: “This new investment underlines our determination to ensure that the airport is able to meet the needs and expectations of the growing number of aviation businesses and customers who use Lydd.”

The airport has spent £35 million upgrading facilities over the past decade, including a new departure lounge, an executive terminal, improving check-in and installing an instrument landing system.

It is undertaking preparation work for its much-anticipated runway extension programme in 2016, following a long-running dispute with local opposition groups which was settled at the High Court in 2014.
