Peel Ports has said its commitment is “stronger than ever” for plans to revive a dockyard it owns in Kent, despite the departure of its port director.
Miles Hearn suddenly left his position at Sheerness Docks last week, having been the leading figure at the unveiling of its 20-year masterplan in 2014.
The proposals aim to transform the maritime transport hub, setting up a direct rail link to Liverpool and creating 1,250 jobs over two decades.
The docks’ owner has said the project remains a key priority, after MP Gordon Henderson said he would write to the company seeking reassurances.
The company recently submitted a planning application to convert the former Thamesteel site for use at the port.
It said it had been given “significant support from the local community” to make use of the derelict site, which it said could create 200 new jobs.
Group planning director Warren Marshall said: “From our perspective, Peel Ports is fully committed to progressing the projects and investments proposed within our masterplan at Sheerness.
“The masterplan was developed because Peel Ports made a long-term, strategic commitment to grow and develop the Port of Sheerness.
“It sets out our intentions of how we plan to develop the port so it remains a key employer and driver for growth in the Swale region for the next two decades.”
Following a lengthy public consultation last year, Peel Ports is reviewing the final proposals and masterplan document.
Feedback from communityu events showed strong support from local residents and stakeholders, with 94% of respondents acknowledging the importance of the Port of Sheerness to the economic success of the region.
