Train bosses are looking to free up more carriages this afternoon after packed services this morning left many fuming as thousands headed to the coast to enjoy the sunshine.

A number of travellers complained of cramped conditions and short trains prompting train firm Southeastern to say it planned to put on more rolling stock to ease problems when people travel back this evening.

Some morning services to Ramsgate were already standing-room only by the time passengers reached Ebbsfleet.

The hot conditions and the long bank holiday weekend, have sent many from London and north and west Kent scurrying to the coast.

But with train services usually reduced on a Sunday, travellers have found themselves elbow-to-elbow - with a number of complaints relating to the high-speed services originating at St Pancras.

It prompted Southeastern to tweet to passengers: "We are sorry if your journey was uncomfortable this morning heading towards the coast.

"All available stock is being used and we are working to release more from scheduled servicing to strengthen trains for your return journey."
