A firm which uses plastic waste to repair and maintain roads has won a major contract to work on road on a number of Greek islands.

Dartford-headquartered Roadfill will work on a road maintenance programme across Corfu, Rhodes and the Dodecanese Islands, starting early next year.

The company will use its environmentally-friendly Roadworx product for the work. It contains recycles plastic polymers, added to an asphalt mix which reduces the amount of bitumen needed to repair or relay a road.

It reduces landfill waste and CO2 emissions while providing local authorities with a more cost-effective solution in covering potholes and managing road repairs.

Jointly funded by the islands’ local authorities and the country’s central government, the new contract follows a partnership pilot between Roadfill and the Greek government’s research and development division. Founded in 2017 by Christie Raptaki, Roadfill has now announced plans to launch a fundraiser to support further investment in additional mobile asphalt plants and other machinery to help it scale up for future growth.

In November, the firm will begin an 18-month sustainability-focused road repair pilot in Plymouth, supported by a £350,000 grant from Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership. Last year, it also secured grant funding of more than £100,000 from Keep+ - funded by the EU's European Regional Development Fund to support a sustainability partnership programme with the University of Greenwich and Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge.
