A site supervisor at a construction firm won the international safety champion award at an industry dinner hosted by BBC presenter Gabby Logan.

Kieren McCafferty of Folkestone-based Walker Construction picked up the prize at the British Safety Council gala dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Friday.

Now in its fifth year, 136 organisations nominated staff for the awards, including GlaxoSmithKline Services, Mace International, BAE Systems and Addison Lee.

Lynda Armstrong OBE, chair of the trustees of the British Safety Council, said: “The award is in recognition of his commitment and effort to keep his colleagues and local community free of injury and ill health. Our warmest congratulations.”

Mr McCafferty has worked at Walker Construction, which also has a site in Ashford, for three years.

He has worked to improve the perception of the industry at White Cliffs Primary College, Dover, which was built by his employer.

He introduced a weekly site tour for all sub-contractors to tackle the dangers surrounding a lack of communication.

Managing director Phil Webb said: “Receiving this award is testament to all of Kieren’s hard work and endeavours.”

He said the award “recognises the team in its entirety”, adding the recognition on an international level is “phenomenal”.
