BAE Systems - one of the county's biggest employers - has seen a rise in sales, with its Kent operation highlighted as one of the "stand-out sectors" in the business.

The aerospace and weapons firm, which has sites around the world, saw sales rise 7% to £20.1billion in 2019 - up from £18.4bn the year before.

And that delivered an operating profit for the year of £1.9bn - up from £1.6bn in 2018.

Its site in Rochester, which handles electronic systems, was highlighted by Charles Woodburn, BAE's chief executive. He said: "Last year was a good year for the company.

"Stand-out were the air sector and electronic systems - both had outstanding years."

Key among the Medway site's successes were the design and development and manufacturing of its Active interceptors - control sticks used for Gulstream aircraft - and work on zero emissions engines for buses.

Mr Woodburn added: "Last year was one of significant progress for BAE Systems.

"We delivered a good set of financial results in line with guidance, growing sales and earnings, with improved operational performance and increased investment in the business to underpin our growth outlook.

"We have a large order backlog and remain focused on strong programme performance to deliver a sustainable business model with enhanced financial performance.”
