Attending university open days is an important part of the process when choosing what and where to study for a degree. They provide an opportunity to find out more about the subjects on offer, meet students and staff, look at accommodation and other facilities and get a real feel for if a university is the right place to spend the next three or four years.
Every year Canterbury Christ Church University welcomes thousands of prospective students accompanied by family and friends to events at its Canterbury and Medway Campuses.
But with the current situation surrounding Covid 19, like universities across the country it has swiftly moved into the world of virtual open days.
The next Virtual Open Day is planned for Friday, June 19 and will attract visitors hoping to start their degree in September as well as those looking ahead for next year. The event will be hosted on an online platform which will provide easy access to lots of content and activities.
In addition to a range of videos, animated fly throughs and 360 degree tours of Christ Church’s excellent facilities, including the new science and technology building opening later this year, there will be plenty of real time events such as academic subject talks and the opportunity to ask questions live.
Current students will also be available to chat to visitors as well as the Students’ Union who will be able to provide information on student activities and life at Christ Church.
Support Services including the accommodation team and student health and wellbeing will give live talks as well being available throughout the day to answer questions. Talks and activities will be recorded so visitors can return to the platform to view content at a time convenient to them
“It is important to make the event as ‘live’ as possible”, said Marco Keir, Director of Marketing and Communications.
“Universities are dynamic environments and we want to provide our visitors with a real sense of who we are and what it would be like to be part of the Christ Church community.
"There will be small teams of staff and students at both Canterbury and Medway providing 'real- time' tours of the campuses as well as some of our accommodation, which will be broadcast live. These tours have been carefully planned to ensure health and safety guidelines are followed.
“We attract students from all over the UK as well as Europe and further afield and it’s important that they see what a beautiful city Canterbury is and what it has to offer so there will be 360 degree views from throughout the city."
"However, plenty of our visitors will be familiar with the great locations we enjoy as many students come from Kent, Medway, London and the surrounding counties.
"Many choose to live in university accommodation but many also choose to travel from home. Christ Church is very much part of the local community and with more and more students deciding to study closer to home this year, we expect the number of students from the local region to increase.
“We’re planning to start on time in September 2020.
"We’re still working through the details but there will be a mix of face-to-face and online teaching in the first semester.
"And we hope that campus based Open Days will start again in the autumn. In the meantime we are excited by the opportunities provided by online events and very much look forward to welcoming visitors to our campuses all from the comfort of their own homes.”
