Another major wine producer in the county has reported a bumper harvest this year thanks to the summer heatwave.

Gusbourne, which has an estate in Appledore on the Romney Marsh, says it had a record quantity of grapes this year.

In a trading update, it said: "Superb conditions throughout the growing season and in particular, during flowering in June and the warm, dry summer over the critical months of July and August resulted in the harvest commencing earlier than ever before.

"The grapes were wonderfully ripe, with optimum levels of natural sugar and acidity across all three varieties - chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier."

Charlie Holland, chief executive officer, added: "We are excited by the exceptional quality of the 2018 harvest.

"It has proved to be an outstanding year across the English wine growing community and I am delighted to report that this excellent crop will of course add to our growing stocks of premium sparkling wine.

"Our talented team continue to focus on quality in all aspects of the wine making processes, carefully selecting the grapes we use in our wines and caring for our vines for the long term."
