THANET will benefit from big gains if the Canterbury and East Kent bid to be City of Culture in 2008 is successful says MP Stephen Ladyman.
Dr Ladyman, who represents South Thanet, said: "Its impact on local regeneration could be huge. We are up against some big hitters like Liverpool and Cardiff but we have a very special offering. We have the Cathedral, local theatres and a range of other attractions.
"We have a deep architectural heritage that includes Pugin at Ramsgate. Our historic links are second to none with the landing places of Julius Caesar, St Augustine, Hengist and Horsa. This area is the birthplace of England.
"Putting the bid together will lead to better co-operation between local councils. Winning the bid would bring tourists and business to east Kent and enhance even further the quality of life."
Canterbury City Council hopes to have the bid, sponsored by Pfizer at Sandwich, ready by the end of March.
