Campaign to reduce work transport accidents

THE biggest ever workplace transport safety campaign is about to be launched and will run for two weeks in Medway and Kent.

Every year more than 100 serious accidents involving people being struck by vehicles at their work are being reported.

The campaign, launched by Bill Callaghan, chairman of the Health and Safety Commission, aims to reduce that figure.

Around 70 HSE inspectors and council officers will be carrying out spot checks on hundreds of sites in the area and Kent Police will also be stopping goods vehicles at roadside safety checkpoints around the county.

Mr Callaghan said: "The production and transportation of food is vitally important to the local economy in Kent and Medway.

"The sheer amount of food produced in the area and arriving at the ports mean that the transportation of food is a significant business - and can generate a significant risk.

"Whilst HSE and local authorities have worked together many times before, the idea of sharing expertise, information and working together on a major initiative such as this, is new."

He added: "The campaign message is simple: ‘Safe site, safe driver, safe vehicle’.”
