A CHANCE meeting over the prawn cocktail at a business dinner in London has led to a real coup for Folkestone.
It was fortuitous that the seating plan at the Lanesborough Hotel that night meant Channel Rotary Club president Courtney Collins found himself next to CBI Director General Digby Jones.
Mr Collins took the opportunity to saucily suggest he come to Shepway to give one of his sparkling speeches. And Mr Jones agreed.
He will be the guest of honour at the Saga Pavilion in Sandgate for a black tie charity dinner on Friday, October 4, where more than 400 businessmen and women will gather to hear from one of the most high profile and entertaining representatives of British commerce.
The gala event has been organised to raise the awareness of Life Education Centres, the rotary club's chosen charity.
It is hoped to raise the £80,000 to buy a mobile classroom which travels around the district's primary schools presenting workshops about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the dangers of drug abuse.
Hythe and Romney Marsh Rotary Clubs are supporting the fundraising effort. Economic advisor and broadcaster Bridget Rosewell will also speak during the evening with other notable guests including Saga chairman Roger De Haan and Folkestone and Hythe MP Michael Howard
Courtney Collins said: "Digby Jones is a dynamic ambassador for British industry and we are absolutely delighted he will be with us. He is leaving Folkestone early the morning after to lead a delegation to Russia. He is a very big boy.
"This is therefore a remarkable opportunity for Kent's business leaders to hear his views, contribute their own thoughts and support a highly regarded charity.
"His presence in the district will certainly put Folkestone on the map."
Tickets are still available. They cost £27.50 which includes a welcome drink and a four course dinner.
