Shepherd Neame has started to install electric car charging stations in the car parks of its range of pubs.

The brewer and pub operator has already opened its first - outside The Wharf in Dartford - and more are to follow hot on its heels.

Next up will be at Singleton Barn in Ashford and The Ship and Trades at Chatham Maritime.

It says more of the pay-as-you-go charging points will follow across its 310 pubs and hotels across the South East.

It comes amid growing concern that the charge-point infrastructure in the UK is set to lag behind the boom in sales of electric cars.

The sale of new diesel and petrol cars is set to prohibited by 2030.

Shepherd Neame’s commercial estate manager, John Barnes, said: “We are committed to an environmentally responsible approach in all areas of the business.

"All three of the sites chosen for the initial roll-out have big car parks perfect for the installation of the charging points, and are conveniently located for drivers at key points across the country near major road systems. We are really excited about this new chapter for our pubs.”

The stations are being installed by London-based firm Osprey Charging, which uses 100% renewable energy.

Users will not need an account or app to use the charge points and can pay with contactless bank card.

The Wharf’s general manager, Marc Watson, added: “We have seen a great response since the charging station opened, with lots of new customers visiting our pub while they are charging their car.

"A rapid charge typically takes around 30 minutes, depending on the car, so it is the perfect opportunity to pop in for refreshments while you are waiting.”
