A FORKLIFT truck dealer has been named as Thanet's top company at the annual Thanet council sponsored business awards at Margate Winter Gardens.

Handling Logic, from Minster, was among the cream of Thanet businesses and employees honoured for the part they play in the area's continued regeneration.

The company, which has been trading for three years and employs five people, was hailed as company of the year and top small business.

Director Steve Miles was "flabbergasted" at the success.

He said: "I was astounded when we were given the small business award - to be named top company in Thanet is unbelievable. Our success is an encouragement for other small businesses."

Judges were impressed with the determination and efficiency of the fledgling outfit that has already established a client base of more than 100 companies in industry and agriculture, including Kent International Airport Manston, Ramsgate New Port, Hornby Hobbies and Pearce Signs.

The Walpole Bay Hotel and Museum in Cliftonville, a family run business, scooped the tourism and leisure award.

Justin Bishop, a member of the family that runs the internationally recognised establishment, said: "When I heard our name being called out I looked straight at mum.

“It was fantastic to be awarded locally for what we are doing for the community."

Employee of the year award went to Roy Grant, who first joined Minster Rural Life Museum 12 years ago as their resident blacksmith, then went on to help with the daily running of the visitor attraction and finally became its curator.

Cllr Bill Hayton , Thanet council chairman, said: "These awards highlight how much the business community in Thanet has to celebrate.

"Thanet is an area with improving prospects and these awards allow us to recognise those businesses, which have made an outstanding contribution to employment opportunities and the local economy."
