A NEW conference centre in Folkestone is expected to result in a tremendous boost to the local economy.
The leader of Shepway council Rory Love said the new centre, which will be an extension to the Leas Cliff Hall, will mean more business for hotels, guest houses and restaurants in the area and will have a "huge impact".
The 500 seat conference centre is due to open in spring 2003, with building work starting in March this year. Cllr Love said: "This is hugely significant for the whole of Shepway. It will breathe new life into the hotels, guest houses and restaurants once it opens.
"People will come to Folkestone all year round for banquets and conferences which means more overnight stays in the area."
Cllr Love estimates that the new conference centre will contribute around £5 million to the local economy each year. He said it would create up to 16,000 extra overnight stays in the district.
