THE latest recipients of Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualifications found out how motivation, inspiration and determination can make them better managers, at a presentation by a top mountaineer.
South African Ian Woodhall belongs to a mountaineering elite – climbers who have reached the summit of Everest from both its north and south faces – which made him well qualified to deliver the inaugural Kent Annual Management Lecture, discussing ‘The Tao of Everest and Practical Leadership’.
During the presentation, organised by Business Link Kent and the two Kent branches of the CMI, Ian spoke about the challenges, triumphs and tragedies encountered over four Everest attempts from 1996 to 2003.
He explored the effectiveness of concentrating on what you can do without being overwhelmed by what you cannot do; the importance of recognising the efforts of others; the value of succeeding in stages, recognising small achievements; and the vital need for integrity as the foundation of leadership.
Tony Buddin, Business Link Kent’s marketing director, said: “Ian’s unique and dramatic presentation…cuts to the very heart of what is most effective in leadership and management.”
During the evening, Mike Pitt, chief executive of Kent County Council, awarded CMI Chartered Manager status to Sue Toon of HM Customs in Dover, and 16 CMI Diplomas in Management and Executive Diplomas in Management.
Kim Hills, East Kent CMI Branch chairman, said: “Taking their inspiration from Ian, I would encourage those who have received their diplomas to progress to Chartered Manager status, to further increase and focus their knowledge, results, skills and impact as managers.”
Business Link Kent can offer subsidies of up to 50 per cent off course fees for the Certificate in Management, Diploma in Management, Executive Diploma in Management or Association of Accounting Technicians qualifications.
