CONCERN is rising over news there could be significant job cuts at Eurotunnel in the coming months.

The company is a major employer in Kent, especially in the Folkestone area, and rumours suggest as much as 20 per cent (800) of their 4,000-strong workforce could go as part of a three-year plan designed to prevent banks taking control of the debt-laden firm.

It was reported Eurotunnel could adopt a similar strategy to low-cost airlines by running fewer services, less carriages on the least busy trains, charging higher fares for peak trips and introducing a loyalty scheme to allow passengers to join without booking.

Eurotunnel say they have consulted with staff representatives and will update them with more information on Thursday.
