Firm shortlisted for prestigious award

A KENT company with social goals has made it onto the shortlist for the prestigious Enterprising Solutions Awards 2007.

The awards (ESA) are designed to find the UK's most dynamic and innovative organisations which trade on the market to solve social and environmental problems.

Focus to Work runs a range of different social enterprises in Margate which are staffed by disadvantaged people, to help them gain a foothold in the labour market.

By offering training and work experience in supportive but commercial environments, including a construction company and a restaurant, the company helps get people off benefits and into work.

Fifteen such 'social enterprises' in total have been shortlisted and winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on October 17.

First place wins a cash prize of £10,000. Three other finalists and the winner of the New Social Enterprise Award will receive £5,000 each.

Chief executive of the Social Enterprise Coalition Jonathan Bland said: "This year's shortlist showcases the incredible range of the vital work being carried out by social enterprises across the entire UK.

"From chocolate companies and graphic designers to care providers and community recyclers, all the social enterprises on this list are outstanding examples of what this exciting business model can achieve.

"By helping disadvantaged people get back into work, offering excluded young people a second chance, regenerating deprived areas, focusing on the environment and much more, these companies are using business principles to deal with the key issues facing Britain today."
