“My year group bonded quickly, and we have lunch together most days. It feels like we’re a family, and I’m getting the social experience that’s often associated with university, without having to move away,” said Roxanne Hector, second-year technical apprentice at BAE Systems in Rochester.

What’s more, an apprenticeship is a good choice if you prefer to learn by doing.

Roxanne said, “It’s a good fit for me, as I’m a practical person who likes to create, design, and fix things. I did consider University, but I didn’t enjoy writing essays! Knowing I could work with cool technology, such as BAE Systems’ Striker® II helmet for pilots, was a big incentive in choosing to work for the company, too.”

“I didn’t know the first thing about electronics, and had no previous experience of engineering, but was interested, and willing to learn,”said Anais Kempster, who is also a second-year technical apprentice at BAE Systems in Rochester. “During my first year, I’d gained the same amount of knowledge as those in my group who joined with A Level Engineering.”

Anais added, “Over the next three years, I’ll be exposed to different areas of the business, which will allow me to tailor my career to my interests. Once I’ve completed my apprenticeship and gained my BTEC, I’d like to complete my Higher National Certificate and then hopefully move on to a part-time degree, all sponsored by the company.”
