AN introduction to health and safety was the subject of a seminar organised by Ashford solicitors, Kingsfords.
The seminar, for clients, was presented by the firm's Patrick Glencross. It outlined the developing framework of health and safety requirements placed upon businesses and their staff by domestic and European legislation and the procedures for enforcement. There was also practical advice on how businesses can best meet their responsibilities.
The typical cost to a business of a serious accident at work has been estimated at £18,000, not to mention the human cost and the loss of a business’ good reputation, says Mr Glencross.
"The fines and legal costs, which follow a prosecution for health and safety breaches, can easily run into thousands of pounds. For these reasons health and safety should be high on the agenda of the management of any business."
It is essential for companies to identify the risks associated with their operations and to eliminate them, the company advises. The increase of occupational stress claims was highlighted and tips given on how the risk of these claims could be recognised and minimised.
Kingsfords will shortly be announcing further seminars due to take place towards the end of the year.
