Around 250 hi-tech jobs and engineering apprenticeships could be created in Dartford.
The SEM manufacturing group and developer Prologis have applied to Dartford council for permission to build a multi-million pound headquarters at The Bridge.
The Bridge is a mixed-use development that includes a science park where the proposed facility would be built.
SEM, which wants to move from Orpington to Dartford to update and future proof its processes, designs and produces electric motors used in sectors such as machine tools, renewable energy, robotics, printing and medical equipment. Most of SEM’s products are sold worldwide.
The new plant will feature a controlled environment for clean manufacturing, laboratories and offices for research and development, along with offices, materials storage and staff facilities.
At 122,474 sq ft, the SEM facility will take up around a third of the allocated Science Park space. However, the overall footprint of the building will be 88,669 sq ft because some areas, such as the offices, will be on two levels.
“It is very good news that SEM is planning to come to The Bridge,” said Paul Weston, senior vice president of Prologis.
“This facility fits exactly with our original vision for the project. Not only does SEM have the potential to bring many skilled jobs to Dartford, but it also strongly supports engineering apprenticeships.
“There is a great opportunity for SEM to work with the new Leigh UTC that is also proposed for The Bridge. Further, SEM could attract other high technology occupiers – and employment opportunities - to Dartford.”
Michael Laming, SEM’s chief executive, added: “The Bridge is an ideal location for SEM and we are certain that we can make a positive contribution to Dartford. We always aim to recruit staff locally and we have a firm commitment to apprenticeship training, so we look forward to becoming an active part of this new community. “
