It's a date for busy networkers

SPEED dating techniques are being used to help business people in Kent network more effectively.

Ashford-based Kent Invicta Chamber has updated them for the business world and introduced Express Networking.

They concluded that networking, like traditional dating, has its merits. Lots of contacts have been cemented and lots of business has been done during leisurely chats over breakfast, lunch, or a pint in the pub.

But it all takes time out of the working day of hard-pressed business people and you never know if you have met all the people who are most relevant.

Express Networking accomplishes the same results as the traditional method but enables many more contacts to be made--and more contacts equals more potential business.

Chamber Membership Manager Jo James explained the inspiration behind the innovation. She said: "Linda Cloke of introduction agency Connexions4U and I decided we had the perfect team to organise a speed networking event.

"They had experience in introductions, the Chamber had the business networking expertise. The result was Express Networking!"

The first event took place at the Russell Hotel, Maidstone, at the end of September and was a huge success, with 36 people taking part.

Participants move from person to person on an organised basis and have a five-minute exchange on what their businesses offer and require.

Questionnaires are completed and the following day each participant is sent a feedback form containing all the information relevant to the exchange. This might be a request for more information, or indication they want to buy or sell.

Statistics from the first event show there were 168 requests for more information, 34 firm expressions of desire to buy products or services, and 123 to sell.

Robert Spicer, of Spicer's caterers, Hythe, said: " It is a fascinating and useful new event, and I am sure it will have a big part to play in the future of networking.

"However, I am now a pensioner so next time I will send my daughter-in-law -- it moves just a little too fast for me!"

Two more Express Networking events are already scheduled for the Russell Hotel on October 28 (free of charge to Kent Invicta Chamber members), and November 25.
