Job cuts on the cards at soup factory

STAFF reductions are expected at Batchelors factory after Campbell's announced they are to review the structure of the team based at its dry soup manufacturing site in Ashford.

This follows the introduction of a range of improved work practices across the site, which has significantly improved productivity.

These proposals could affect 24 jobs and Campbell's has pledged to immediately begin the required consultation process with its employees and their elected representatives.

Factory manager Tim Gregory said the proposal was a difficult one, but essential if the factory is going to continue to be successful in an increasingly competitive food industry.

He said: "We have invested more than £1m in improvements at Ashford during the past 12 months, including installing new automated production equipment.

"This means that we are in a good position for success in the long-term. However, in order to remain competitive, we need to make sure we are as effective and efficient as possible and this review is about getting in shape for future growth."

Mr Gregory said the company would work hard to look after people affected by the proposal.

He said: "We will offer our people a range of options, including the chance to apply for voluntary redundancy or positions at another Campbell's factory. We would also offer redundancy packages that recognise their commitment and contribution, as well as comprehensive assistance finding alternative employment."
