The number of people on unemployment benefits in Kent has dropped again.
The latest figures have shown that there were 18,910 claimants of jobseeker’s allowance or universal credit last month, a fall of 200 on the figures for May.
Across the county, Medway still has the largest number of claimants - 3,395, although this figure is coming down. Sevenoaks has the lowest figures with just 510 claimants, followed by Tunbridge Wells and then Tonbridge and Malling.
In the country as a whole, unemployment fell by 64,000 to 1.49 million in the three months to May.
This means that the unemployment rate is now 4.5%, this is the lowest it has been since Harold Wilson’s final term in Downing Street back in 1975.
It wasn't all good news for workers though - today's figures also showed that wages are not keeping up with inflation.
A report from the Office of National Statistics claimed that average weekly earnings increased by 1.8% including bonuses in the March-May quarter. However, inflation jumped by 2.9% in May, so these figures confirm that earnings are falling in real terms.
