A MOBILE greengrocer's that has been on the road for 80 years comes to rest on Saturday.

Bob Mount inherited G.Mount & Sons, Herne Bay, from his grandfather George 31 years ago, but will be calling it a day when he retires just before his 60th birthday.

The mobile business, which began with a horse and cart in 1922, has become a favourite with townsfolk over the years.

Deliveries have kept up a sense of community, stopping at family homes as well as providing a valuable service for the elderly and unwell.

Mr Mount has given a note to customers which reads: "I would like to thank you for your custom and friendship over the past 31-and-a-half years.

"Like all good things in life they must come to an end one day, I can tell you I will miss you all as good friends."

He said: "Everyone has said how disappointed they are that I'm going, but I've been doing it on my own for the past nine years and it's time to stop.

"It's hard work and I have never worn so much waterproof clothing as I had to last winter. They are long days and you don't know who's about after dark."

In 80 years there have been plenty of changes to the business, which at one point ran six days a week with two lorries.

A party is being held for Bob at The First and Last pub on Saturday, January 26.
