“It’s not just a job, it’s a vocation - it’s what I’ve chosen to do.
"I love to see the rewards from what we’ve achieved together and the difference we’ve made.”
Angela has worked in healthcare for over 20 years and for the last few has specialised in Positive Behaviour Support (PBS).
“It is far more involved than usual social care work and far more person centred. The people we support can be challenging at times, but if you have worked as a support worker previously, or if you have experience in working with autistic people or people with learning disabilities, then I can’t think of a more rewarding job.”
“All behaviour, including challenging behaviour, happens for a reason. In the PBS team we work closely with colleagues and the people we support to develop and build the skills of the person and of those who support them.
“It’s about respecting the person as an individual and understanding their behaviour so that you can work with the team to make proactive and positive approaches to improve the quality of their life.
“It’s also all about communication - once we understand why someone is behaving a certain way, we can support them to access the things they need in other ways – for example by supporting them to learn a new skill.”
