A power generation company has expanded its manufacturing operation after receiving £13 million in new business.
Cummins Power Generation is a company that is dedicated to improving electrical power around the globe, making it both more reliable and available.
The investment will see the Thanet-based company increase its annual turnover to more than £400 million – a number of new jobs will also be created.
The facility produces power generators and equipment that is distributed around the world, for use in locations such as schools and hospitals.
Cummins have also said that they plan to double their current turnover by 2020.
Manufacturing will be improved and it will begin creating electrical equipment in the marine industry, taking over from Cummins Marine – a branch of the firm which specialised in building generators for boats.
This expansion will create a number of skilled jobs - as a new production area will be constructed at the site to cope with the influx of business.
Marco Carini, plant manager, said: “The Kent plant has been on a transformational journey over the past five years and is now at the top of its game and leading by example.
“Our team has implemented super-efficient, high quality and innovative manufacturing techniques through using the latest in technology and programmes to improve shop-floor safety, product quality, productivity, lead and delivery times and customers service.”
The Manston site currently employs around 600 staff, 150 of which work on the production lines building and testing the generators.
Mr Carini added “The transfer of the new Cummins Marine business will adopt the current processes and standards at the Kent facility to allow us to meet customer demand.
"We have undertaken additional skills training for our operational and customer service staff to enable them to complete assembly of the units and understand the product.
“Our plan is to grow the Kent business from current annual sales of £400 million to £800 million by 2020, of which the mobile marine production will form an important part.
"Meeting our ambitious growth goals will improve the site’s sustainability, long-term future and secure and create jobs for local people and the Thanet area.”
