'No DIY sales' pledge

THE second largest builders' merchant in the country could soon be moving on to land on the White Cliffs Business Park, Whitfield, Dover. Travis Perkins wants to change empty premises in Honeywood Parkway into a new business for builders, plumbers and landscape gardeners.

Dover District Council's planning committee was told the company had no intention of encouraging general DIY sales to the public. About eight jobs will be recreated at the site and the company had no plans to open on Saturday afternoons or Sundays.

"Dover is an excellent opportunity for us," Steve Quarrington, the regional director for Travis Perkins, told councillors. "Our move to Whitfield will also good for the local people and the economy of Dover."

The committee approved the plans for a change of use for the former Nagel Logistics site, which include a new outside storage area. Protesters had voiced worries about traffic problems in Honeywood Parkway, but Cllr Dean Watson said the road was not narrow and the business would attract trade customers, not every-day cash shoppers.
